Join Us at the Capitol: Transit Equity Advocacy Day – May 21

Connecticut students and veterans deserve a better ride.

Connecticut Roundtable On Climate And Jobs is partnering with Save the Sound, Connecticut Renews, Conservation Law Foundations, BLM860, Nonprofit Accountability Group, Sierra Club CT, CT Climate Crisis Mobilization, Sunrise CT, New Haven Climate Movement, Fridays for Future, Social Justice League at UHSSE, and New Haven Leon Sister City Project on Tuesday, May 21, at the Connecticut State Capitol to demand fare-free public bus service for high school students and veterans—and we’re calling on advocates, organizers, students, and supporters from across the state to join us.

Here’s why it matters:

For too many in our communities, the cost of a bus ride stands between them and their future. Whether it’s getting to class, job interviews, medical appointments, or community events—transportation is a necessity, not a luxury. But since the end of the pandemic-era fare-free program, ridership has plummeted and transit barriers have deepened.

That’s why we’re rallying behind SB 1243, a bill that would permanently provide fare-free bus access to Connecticut public high school students and veterans. This is about equity, dignity, and access—and we’re showing up to make sure lawmakers get the message.

Passing SB 1243 would:

  • Remove a major barrier for students trying to attend school, internships, and after-school programs
  • Help veterans access job training, healthcare, and essential services
  • Boost ridership, reduce emissions, and move us closer to a more just, sustainable transit future
  • Signal that Connecticut believes transportation is a right—not a privilege
